RCS COVID-19 Update

Dear RCS Families,
On Friday, Jan. 8, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) provided new guidance for in-person instruction and reinforced infection control measures to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spread in schools.
The state’s goal is to have all Michigan school districts offer an in-person learning option for students no later than March 1. This timeline aligns with the recommendations of the Rochester Community School District’s task force.
At this time, students enrolled in in-person learning can expect to return to face-to-face instruction by cohorts using the following phased-in approach.
  • Jan. 25:  Elementary and some special education populations
  • Feb. 1:  Middle school
  • Feb. 8:  High school
Key considerations when creating this timeline included: safety, learning content, contact time, food services, transportation, staffing and stability, along with federal, state and local guidance.
The staggered approach to in-person instruction ensures the smoothest transition possible for our students and provides the opportunity to evaluate processes and make improvements before the next level returns to their building.
All plans remain flexible depending on conditions. We will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 cases within our district so our teams can effectively serve our students. The safety of children and adults remains our priority.
Class schedules will be provided as soon as they are available at the secondary level. For your awareness, the last day for first-semester work is Jan. 15, which gives our teams the weekend and two work days to create schedules in time for the new semester to begin on Jan. 20. Although our system was never intended to enable scheduling by semester, we are adapting to accommodate the ever-changing environment.
Moving forward, our task force continues to explore options to enhance the hybrid schedules. For example at the secondary level, to limit the amount of time that students would be maskless in a building, an 11:50 a.m. dismissal time with a grab-and-go lunch is being evaluated. The task force is also working to ensure daily teacher contact time with less asynchronous time.
Please continue to check your email for updated information within the next week.
You may be aware that Oakland County educators, pre-K – grade 12, may now register for a COVID-19 vaccination appointment; however, the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) currently has a limited vaccine supply. Availability is expected to increase in the coming weeks and months, and appointment access will increase accordingly. We will continue to keep our community informed of any updates.
We recognize that families may have questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach out to your building administrator who will be glad to assist. Families can also use the Talk to RCS feature on our website at www.rochester.k12.mi.us.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Debi Fragomeni
Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning

 OSTC Update

Dear Falcon OSTC Families,
With the recent update sent from OSTC regarding their return to face to face instruction on January 19th, we recognize that there are conflicts as we remain in a remote setting until our proposed return to in-person instruction on February 8th.
The schedule below was created to highlight the conflicts that will occur until we return to the RCS in- person/hybrid learning model.
We are asking that all OSTC students communicate with their teachers here at Rochester, as well as their teachers at OSTC, regarding the various ways students can access coursework.  It will be up to students to choose which classes to attend during the times of conflict and to communicate that with their teachers.
We will also communicate these conflicts with our teachers and ask that they do their best to accommodate our OSTC students during this temporary transition.
Transportation in the form of bussing to and from Rochester will occur.  Please see the bussing schedule below.

Dear RHS Families,
Your Rochester High School Falcon marching band is pleased to announce a new fundraiser that will help raise money to send our marching band students to Hawaii in June of 2021, as well as honor the veterans in your life! For a small donation of $10, you can honor your veteran by having their name printed on a custom Falcon Marching Band Veteran Banner that will be proudly displayed throughout the Spring marching band season ("Red, White and Blue" halftime shows, Memorial Day parade, Hawaii performances, and more!)

Please go to this fundraiser-specific page for more details! https://rhsrpms.weebly.com/veteranbanner.html

The veteran's names are printed on the red and white stripes of a banner that will be printed to look like an American flag. Please contact Maria Miceli with any questions at mariamiceli76@gmail.com. Thank you for your support.

 Athletic Update on Winter Sports

Rochester Community Schools is pleased to provide the latest update regarding winter sports with recent guidance from the MDHHS and MHSAA. Winter sports are to resume Jan 16th.  Practice and tryout information is listed below.

Boys and girls basketball, wrestling, hockey and competitive cheer (per the MDHHS) are considered contact sports and have been allowed to conduct non contact practices while maintaining 6 feet social distancing at all times.  This current order is effective Jan 16th through Jan 31st.  At this time competitions are anticipated to begin after Feb 1st. Safety protocols have been put in place and must be adhered to for the health and safety of RCS athletes, staff and families. These protocols include pre-screening, temperature checks, wearing masks (all athletes and coaches must wear masks at all time.), handwashing and maintaining six feet of distance.
Boys swim and dive will also begin practices Jan 16th and have been allowed to begin swim meets starting Jan 22nd.  Masks must be worn when not physically swimming in the pool.  Social distancing must be adhered to when on the pool deck, in the locker room and sitting in the bleachers.

Athlete Checklist
A sports physical must be on file in the athletic department or turned into your coach on the first day of practice/tryout.  Physicals turned in during the 2019-20 school year are considered valid for the 2020-21 school year provided they were dated April 15-2019 or more recent.  For those athletes with a physical on file from last school year, a health questionnaire form must be filled out by the parent/guardian and turned into the coach on the first day of practice/tryouts.  Click here to print out the health questionnaire    If any questions on the questionnaire are answered with a “yes”, the student athlete then must get a new physical before allowed to participate.
Before each practice and tryout session, each athlete will be asked to fill out a Google Covid survey via their mobile device which will then be followed by an onsite temperature check conducted by the athletic trainer, coach or Athletic Director.  Athletes with positive symptoms or a temperature higher than 100.3 should not attend practice and will be discreetly removed from activity.  Each program’s coaches will send out the survey link for athletes to fill out, survey links are also listed below.  MASKS ARE REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES ALONG WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING AND NO CONTACT DURING PRACTICES.

Rochester Athletic Booster Club Meetings

The Rochester Athletic Booster Club is seeking members for two Executive Board positions for the 2021-2022 school year - the Treasurer and Secretary positions will be available. If you have any questions about these positions, please reach out to a current board member to find out more information.

Booster club meetings will be held on Mondays at 6pm on the following days:
February 8, 2021, March 8, 2021, April 12, 2021, May 10, 2021, & June 14, 2021.

Rochester Athletic Booster Club supports our Falcon athletes, teams and coaches. Boosters has provided over $25,000 in financial assistance to teams just last year!  We had to cancel our only fundraiser in March due to Covid and membership is very low so far this year. This loss of funding will not only impact the 20-21 seasons but the 21-22 seasons as well. Your membership will help ensure that we have the necessary funds to support our Falcons. Please consider becoming a Booster member or giving a tax-deductible donation. Thank you!
