Return to In-Person Instruction

As Rochester Community Schools begins to welcome students and staff back to the buildings, a hybrid structure will be utilized to decrease the density by approximately 50 percent in each school. Students will be divided into two cohort groups, A and B, with one cohort attending school in-person each day and the other cohort learning asynchronously at home. Synchronous remote learning will take place on Wednesdays for all students in both cohorts. A full day of in-person instruction will appear 45 minutes shorter so teachers have time to connect with the cohort learning at home. Information about cohort groups and transportation will be provided next week. We anticipate cohorts being grouped alphabetically.
  • Oct. 5    Some students enrolled in special education programs attend half day Oct. 5-9. These include programs for Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cognitive Impairments (CI), Severe Multiple Impairments (SXI), Emotional Impairments (EI), and Adult Transition Programs and Services (ATPS).
  • Oct. 14  Only high school seniors attend for SAT testing.
  • Oct. 19  All high school students attend by cohort.
  • There will be no changes for those students enrolled in the RCS Virtual Campus.
  • Early childhood special education sessions will be scheduled by the teacher.
Please note, there will be a full day schedule on October 9th, not a half day as shown previously in the school calendar.

Fall State Testing Update

Below are the updated details for the fall 2020 PSAT/SAT testing schedule. PSAT/SAT testing is strongly recommended for all RCS students. Testing is scheduled to be held at Rochester, Stoney Creek, and Adams high schools. As mandated by the state, current testing cannot be done at home.  District COVID protocols will be followed during examination. The health and safety of students and staff remains our top priority. As COVID is a fluid situation, both at the local, state, and national level, there is a possibility of changes in testing.
Updated Plan:
On October 14th, 12th grade will be testing from 7:30am - 1:00pm
On October 29th, 10th & 11th grades will be testing from 7:30am - 11:30am.
  • Transportation will be provided to students who require busing via assigned district bus routes.
  • Students will be required to bring their own #2 pencil and calculator.
  • Pre-packaged snacks will be provided to students to be consumed at safe designated times.
  • Students will be required to wear face coverings and socially distance while in the building.
-9th grade students will receive PSAT testing in the spring of 2021. If plans are altered again, we will communicate as soon as we can.
-Seniors taking the SAT with Essay should come to the test day knowing the four colleges or universities where they would like their test scores sent. Updated college codes can be found here: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/sat-score-reporting-code-list.pdf
***Virtual High School: students will test at their respective “home” high school (RHS, SCHS, AHS) on the above testing dates.

Final Plan for Wednesday, Oct. 14th
9th Grade-NO SCHOOL
10th Grade-NO SCHOOL
11th Grade-NO SCHOOL
12th Grade-SAT w/Essay
Tentative Plan for Thursday, October 29th
9th Grade-NO SCHOOL
10th Grade-PSAT
11th Grade-PSAT**

12th Grade-NO SCHOOL
**If classes return to Remote on Thursday, October 29th, testing is in-person.

Attention seniors!
  • Because of the fluidity of COVID – 19, it is recommended students check their potential college’s websites for admission, scholarship requirements, and criteria related to testing so they can plan accordingly.
  • Please note, as it currently stands, there are also opportunities to test on a National Saturday through the College Board if a student would like an additional testing opportunity.  If you choose to test on a Saturday, it’s the responsibility of the student to register and pay for the Saturday test.
  • See the link below for National SAT Saturday testing and registration information. You only need to register online for National Saturday testing, and NOT for SAT school day.           https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register/dates-deadlines
  • For students and families who are wondering if they meet the SAT fee waiver eligibility for National Saturday testing see information on this link. If you are eligible and haven’t received a fee waiver code please reach out to your counseling office for more information. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register/fees/fee-waivers

Remote Learning Overview

School will begin on Tuesday, September 1st for all students. As this is a Tuesday, students will be attending 4th, 5th and 6th hour. Additionally, there will not be school on Friday, September 4th, or Monday, September 7th due to Labor Day. In temporary remote learning, all students begin the school day at 8:30 am.

During the first weeks of school, students can expect to meet their teachers and classmates online, complete tutorials and guided sessions to introduce remote and virtual learning, and begin establishing class routines and expectations. Student attendance will be taken each day. Classes will include a live video meeting (Zoom/Google Meet) each day in which attendance will be taken and recorded by the teacher. The camera should be turned on in the beginning of the virtual meeting for attendance purposes. Parents are still responsible for reporting their child’s absence through our attendance line (248) 726-5410 or through ParentVUE.

RCS Social-Emotional Resources for Families and Students

Families are invited to take advantage of the student wellness resources that have been compiled in a new website, developed specifically for the RCS community by our RCS teams. This valuable collection of tools provides crisis contacts, family activity ideas, parent resources, book recommendations, coping strategies, and contact information for the counselors and professionals in each school.

The social-emotional resource site can be accessed from the RCS webpage at www.rochester.k12.mi.us or you may go to: https://rcssocialemotionalresources.weebly.com/.

Our educators and support staff will use these tools throughout the school year to develop personal connections and foster students’ social-emotional awareness and sense of belonging. When educators aim to understand the experiences and backgrounds of their students, they can develop an appreciation for their students’ cultural identities and build authentic relationships. This creates a culture that promotes acceptance and trust, which can positively influence academic and social-emotional outcomes.

Food Service

The USDA approved a waiver effective Monday, August 31, 2020, that provides breakfast and lunchtime meals, free of charge, for all children 18 years of age and younger, including ATPS students 26 years of age and younger.

Curbside meal pickup is available, staring Tuesday, September 8, 2020. Adults may collect food for a student without the child being present. This program will run through December 31, 2020, or until funding is no longer available.

All families wishing to sign up for this program must submit a new registration, even if they had previously registered for other food service programs.

To register, go to:  https://forms.gle/YuwHFFGedx3dXbah7. Families will not receive a reply confirmation. Only one registration is needed per family.

Food service meals are distributed in two- and three-day increments of breakfast and lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the specified location listed below. The next food distribution day will be Tuesday September 8, 2020.
  • Rochester High School pickup: For McGregor, Long Meadow, Hamlin, and Rochester High families (Bus loop off of Walton Boulevard).
We encourage families to continue to fill out the online free and reduced meal application for the 2020-2021 school year. A new application is required to be completed at the beginning of each school year. For the online free and reduced meal application process, go to:  https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/DistrictRedirect/ROCHESTER_MI?langid=1.

Applications for the current school year support the district beyond food service including Title I and 31a funding. This program also connects families to other community resources including Blessings in a Backpack, Neighborhood House and possible individual support for district programs.

If there are specific questions or concerns, please contact the Food Service Office at (248)726-4618 or email: focfoodservice@rochester.k12.mi.us.

Rochester Athletic Booster Club Meetings

Booster club meetings will be held on Mondays at 6pm on the following days:
October 12, 2020, November 9, 2020, December 14, 2020, January 11, 2021, February 8, 2021, March 8, 2021, April 12, 2021, May 10, 2021, & June 14, 2021.

Rochester Athletic Booster Club supports our Falcon athletes, teams and coaches. Boosters has provided over $25,000 in financial assistance to teams just last year!  We had to cancel our only fundraiser in March due to Covid and membership is very low so far this year. This loss of funding will not only impact the 20-21 seasons but the 21-22 seasons as well. Your membership will help ensure that we have the necessary funds to support our Falcons. Please consider becoming a Booster member or giving a tax-deductible donation. Thank you!
