Here are some examples of how your PTSA uses its funds to support our students: books and furniture for classrooms, maker space materials, recycle carts, Quiz Bowl support, funding for Amity Scholars and the virtual autopsy presentation, staff wish box, and more.

Congratulations to Our National Merit Semifinalists!
|
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Over 1.5 million juniors entered the competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. These talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 national Merit scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Congratulations to the five students from Rochester High School for being recognized as a Semifinalist!

Textbook Condition Form
Each year, students at RHS complete a “textbook condition sheet” after receiving their textbooks. On these sheets, students can note any existing wear and tear for books that have been with RHS for a while and may have existing wear. It’s important for students to document it so they are not charged a repair or replacement fee at the end of the year.
This year, textbook conditions sheets are now completed using an online Google Form at http://bit.ly/RHStextbooks.
All students are encouraged to fill out the form for each of their books, For students who choose not to, it will be assumed there is no existing damage.

Remote Learning Overview
School will begin on Tuesday, September 1st for all students. As this is a Tuesday, students will be attending 4th, 5th and 6th hour. Additionally, there will not be school on Friday, September 4th, or Monday, September 7th due to Labor Day. In temporary remote learning, all students begin the school day at 8:30 am.
During the first weeks of school, students can expect to meet their teachers and classmates online, complete tutorials and guided sessions to introduce remote and virtual learning, and begin establishing class routines and expectations. Student attendance will be taken each day. Classes will include a live video meeting (Zoom/Google Meet) each day in which attendance will be taken and recorded by the teacher. The camera should be turned on in the beginning of the virtual meeting for attendance purposes. Parents are still responsible for reporting their child’s absence through our attendance line (248) 726-5410 or through ParentVUE.

RCS Social-Emotional Resources for Families and Students
Families are invited to take advantage of the student wellness resources that have been compiled in a new website, developed specifically for the RCS community by our RCS teams. This valuable collection of tools provides crisis contacts, family activity ideas, parent resources, book recommendations, coping strategies, and contact information for the counselors and professionals in each school.
The social-emotional resource site can be accessed from the RCS webpage at www.rochester.k12.mi.us or you may go to: https://rcssocialemotionalresources.weebly.com/.
Our educators and support staff will use these tools throughout the school year to develop personal connections and foster students’ social-emotional awareness and sense of belonging. When educators aim to understand the experiences and backgrounds of their students, they can develop an appreciation for their students’ cultural identities and build authentic relationships. This creates a culture that promotes acceptance and trust, which can positively influence academic and social-emotional outcomes.
