Spotlight on Instruction
Mrs. Malsbury hasn’t let our change of environment affect her engagement with students in her Small Business class! Every lesson starts with some good news and a warm up activity that gets the blood pumping or engages students. Some of her best sellers have been: 10 minute abs, 5 second game, Kahoot quizzes, scavenger hunts, wear a piece of unusual headwear to class, and 2 truths and a lie. Another attention grabber has been a host of guest speakers invited to the classroom Zoom meet ups. This move has provided students with the opportunity to continue to hear what’s going on at the local level concerning government, business, and social emotional health. You can watch her recent classroom highlight on the link below that was a part of a segment on Channel 4. Way to go Mrs. Malsbury and all of our awesome Falcons!

A Message From the New Staff at RHS
A Message of Gratitude from Dr. Shaner
Dear RCS Community,
Over the past six weeks, we have been focusing on the implementation of our remote learning plan centered on the social-emotional wellness of our students to ensure they feel reassured, confident and loved. I encourage you to think about the remarkable accomplishments of our students, parents, and staff throughout our community in this short amount of time. They have proven that connections, relationships, and commitment can lead to success in any situation.
We are in this together, and the resilience of our students is a true testament to the support they are receiving.
I wish we could capture what every family has achieved, the countless ways teachers, administrators, and support staff have encouraged and shown love to our students, and how reassuring our community has been. The way remote learning has been embraced is worth celebrating. With that said, I invite you to click on the following link to view a 5-minute video that celebrates the amazing work that is taking place across the district.
I am profoundly grateful to serve alongside our exemplary, highly skilled staff who are expanding on what it means to put students first. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
With sincere appreciation,
Robert Shaner, Ph.D.

Thank You Healthcare Workers
|
On behalf of Rochester Community Schools, RHS would like to thank all healthcare workers on their hard work during this difficult time in our country. Your outstanding bravery and tremendous efforts in keeping our community safe is noticed and appreciated. A special thank you goes out to those healthcare workers related, or close to some of our Rochester High School staff. THANK YOU! |
Thank You RCS
While staff at Rochester High School is working with remote learning, our colleagues at our Board Office are working nonstop to ensure that every student and staff member is taken care of. They are there helping, whether its scheduling, technology, communication, food service, etc. Thank you for all that you do in making sure that every one receives support during this time. |
Update on Remote Learning
Dear RCS Families and Staff Members,
Welcome back from spring break! As you are aware, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the state of Michigan continues to be on a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order from the governor. All school buildings are closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.
In compliance with the executive order, RCS has submitted a plan for remote learning to Oakland Schools, our local intermediate school district, and the plan has been approved. Therefore, we will continue with the same remote learning schedule for secondary students that we have used since March 20. Click here to view online class access codes.
Our goal is to provide meaningful learning opportunities for students based on their current course schedule. Students are encouraged to complete the activities/tasks provided by teachers. Attendance will be taken. A student will be counted as “attending” whenever there is teacher contact, such as an assignment returned, participation in a class meeting, an email, etc.
Calendar dates for the remainder of the year:

Expectations of Secondary Students:
- Check the district’s student email accounts and/or Remind texts daily about coursework, lessons, and/or content. Students should receive information from teachers based on the schedule of daily interactions above.
- Use proper netiquette for online learning (see below).
- Attendance will be taken; you are encouraged to participate as much as you can.
- No letter grades will be given during remote learning. Students will receive feedback on submitted work, and work may be graded on a pass/fail basis.
- At the end of the semester, students will receive a G (pass/credit) or an H (fail/no credit). This will be based on the participation and the work submitted. This will not impact a student’s GPA either positively or negatively.
- If a student does not understand something, he/she can contact the teacher the same day, if possible. Please understand teachers may not be able to respond right away.
- We ask for patience if a student does not receive communication from a teacher on the day of the class.
- Use respectful behavior and language.
- Stick to appropriate topic discussions.
- Wear school appropriate clothing when attending meetings via video.
- Be honest. Do not plagiarize or copy others’ work.

Updates for AP Students
Important Information for AP testing
There has been a lot of information provided by College Board to students who are taking an upcoming online AP test. Below are important resources for students and families:
The first of this process is for students to check the email address they have on file with College Board (in their AP account). This is the email that testing information is sent to.
After confirming your email address, the most comprehensive document to read on testing is here. It is long, but very detailed. Most questions can be answered if you read though this testing guide thoroughly:
https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-testing-guide-2020.pdf?SFMC_cid=EM305178-&rid=47388674
On testing day this checklist is suggested for students to follow.
