An Update From Your RHS Admin Team
Rochester High School’s Deputy Curtis is well known for singing in the halls as he develops trust and relationships with RHS students. This week is no different. Deputy Curtis continues to connect with our students and our community with his new song, “Flatten the Curve” written about the Coronavirus outbreak.
Thank you Deputy Curtis for being a community resource for our parents and students during these times.

Update on Remote Learning
Dear RCS Families and Staff Members,
Welcome back from spring break! As you are aware, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the state of Michigan continues to be on a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order from the governor. All school buildings are closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.
In compliance with the executive order, RCS has submitted a plan for remote learning to Oakland Schools, our local intermediate school district, and the plan has been approved. Therefore, we will continue with the same remote learning schedule for secondary students that we have used since March 20. Click here to view online class access codes.
Our goal is to provide meaningful learning opportunities for students based on their current course schedule. Students are encouraged to complete the activities/tasks provided by teachers. Attendance will be taken. A student will be counted as “attending” whenever there is teacher contact, such as an assignment returned, participation in a class meeting, an email, etc.
Calendar dates for the remainder of the year:

- Check the district’s student email accounts and/or Remind texts daily about coursework, lessons, and/or content. Students should receive information from teachers based on the schedule of daily interactions above.
- Use proper netiquette for online learning (see below).

- If a student does not understand something, he/she can contact the teacher the same day, if possible. Please understand teachers may not be able to respond right away.
- We ask for patience if a student does not receive communication from a teacher on the day of the class.
- Use respectful behavior and language.
- Stick to appropriate topic discussions.
- Wear school appropriate clothing when attending meetings via video.

Updates for AP Students
Like all of the students in RCS, you are likely feeling a great deal of loss right now, and that is perfectly understandable. You have lost many opportunities to interact with teachers, classmates, and friends, as well as numerous opportunities for sports, music, theater, and many other activities. We mourn these losses with you.
Unlike all of the other students in RCS, though, you still have a chance to end the year in your AP course(s) by doing what you set out to do in the beginning: Take the AP test and earn potential college credit.
As you know, the AP tests have been modified to meet the COVID-19 challenges that we all face this year. Most tests will be taken at home and will be approximately 45 minutes in length. Those of you who have taken AP tests in the past can attest to the fact that this is a much more desirable circumstance than a normal AP testing environment. Another “plus” is that this year’s AP tests are open book tests designed to measure your understanding of the major concepts of the course.
Even more important, all indications are that colleges and universities are planning to accept the scores, like they always have, for credit or for advancing to higher level courses. Our counselors have been in contact with many college admissions offices, who all pledge to be flexible and adaptable to the circumstances created by COVID-19 and the executive orders surrounding it. AP Students who test successfully may still earn college credit and potentially save on college costs.
On April 16th from 7-8PM EST, the College Board will be hosting a webinar for parents and guardians to share information about this year’s at-home AP Exams and how to help your student prepare. This webinar will go into detail about the online exams and format, how to prepare at home for them, and answer common questions parents and students may have. Registration is required. Please click HERE to register, and you and your student can view the webinar live on April 16th. If you are unable to view the webinar live, you will be able to access it later at collegeboard.org. Given these circumstances, we strongly recommend that students test on the date they are currently scheduled on by College Board. Click HERE for testing schedule.
For students who are no longer interested in taking an AP test that they have registered for, there are two options for obtaining refunds:
Again, we believe that the long term opportunities are better for students who decide to test, but we fully understand that students may have changed their mind about testing given the current situation. If you have any questions, you can reach out to the AP Coordinator, Christopher Green CGreen@Rochester.k12.mi.us
Best wishes as you prepare for your AP tests, or as you make the difficult decision not to test.

- Option One: Complete the attached form by May 8th requesting a refund for the amount paid for testing. The RCS business office will begin to review the registrations and process the refund requests. Those who registered and paid using the online payment system may see a reimbursement sooner than those who paid by other methods.
- Option Two: Don’t do anything right now. If you plan to test but make the decision at the last minute not to, you can still receive a reimbursement. Once all of the testing is complete (June 5th), College Board will provide the district with a list of students who tested, and a reimbursement will be created for those students who did not test. These refunds will likely be sent in July.
