On Friday, February 21st, German students and their teachers, Ms. Theresa Robinson and Mr. Brady Crites, went to German Day at the University of Michigan. The topic this year was "Vielfalt Gewinnt" (diversity wins) and students created works based on that motto. Our students had a great time exploring all the posters, comics, artwork and videos prepared by them and other schools throughout the state. Some of the works received recognition by the German Day Committee.

The Rochester High School Art Department took 45 students to Detroit to tour the Stock X facilities located inside of One Campus Martius. RHS Falcon Selcted for the "Shadowing Your Senator" Program

Picture

Last Thursday, one of our RHS students, Mackenzie L., had the pleasure of shadowing State Senator Mallory McMorrow.  Mackenzie applied and was selected to come to Lansing for a day and job shadow Senator McMorrow.
During the day, Mackenzie attended a senate session and sat in on meetings with NARAL and the President of the Michigan’s Women's Commission. Mackenzie also got to talk to the Senator personally about perusing politics and especially how her gender comes to play a role in her profession.

Thank you Mackenzie for representing your fellow Falcons!

Week of Kindness Fundraiser

Student Council hosted their third annual Week of Kindness during February 10th-14th. The goal was for everyone to feel loved and happy. We had many opportunities at lunch to give back. One treat we had was sophomore Alana May’s cookies at lunch. Her cookies looked and tasted amazing! All of the cookies sold out within two days. The money raised went to Leader Dogs for the Blind with a grand total of $300. It was incredible to see one of our own Falcons raise money and help during our week of kindness. A huge thank you to Alana May! If you ever need cookies, please reach out to her via her instagram: @laniemaysbakery.

New Feature for Reporting Absences

We are excited to try a new feature in ParentVUE for reporting all-day absences using ParentVue via a web browser or the mobile app. For now, this pilot will be open for all students in grades 6–12 and is now live in ParentVUE. Since this is a pilot, we appreciate your patience as we fine-tune the settings and process. We would also love to hear your feedback if you get a chance to try this new way of reporting absences. Click the PDF below for instructions and details on this process.
Reporting absences through ParentVUE is completely optional. You may still choose to contact the RHS attendance office as you have before. Partial day absences will still need to be called in to the attendance office.
For ParentVUE tech support and feedback, please email rcsvuehelp@rochester.k12.mi.us.

Vote for Louis!

Picture
The purpose of the I AM SPORT Award is to celebrate high school student athletes who volunteer their time to benefit those in their community. Please vote for our RHS student athlete to win the I AM SPORT Award. You may vote up to once per day until March 2nd at 9:00 am by clicking here.
Louis Bowes volunteers with PAL and for Salvation Army as well, but also, unofficially, Louis will always offer to lend a hand to anyone he sees that may benefit. If you walk through a door with Louis, he will hold it open and wait patiently for the next kind soul to relieve him of his act of kindness. Also, at Christmastime, You might find Louis ringing the bell, or collecting Toys for Tots through Salvation Army. He also volunteers to carry donated gifts for parents in need to their vehicles. The young PAL athletes at Woodside Bible Church call Louis Bowes, “Sweet Lou”, which is a nickname Coach bestowed upon this big hearted young man. “Sweet Lou” has benefited from the PAL organization tremendously, and it is his honor to give back.

Spotlight on Instruction

Picture
Mr. Gollon’s AP English Literature class is preparing for their semester long literary research project. Within small groups, students are creating an hour long presentation on some aspects of a literary genre, literary movement, or literary theme. Mr. Gollon scaffolds the learning by calling upon the school’s media specialist, Julie Harris, to show students how to access data bases for research and use Noodle tools for documentation and collaboration. The value to this project is in preparing students with a mindset of a college student. Students are shifting from learning to write to writing to learn. They are engaged with ideas, set goals, display agency, make choices, and express creativity leading to empowered, self-directed learners.
