A Look Back at the Class of 1990!
New Feature for Reporting Absences
We are excited to try a new feature in ParentVUE for reporting all-day absences using ParentVue via a web browser or the mobile app. For now, this pilot will be open for all students in grades 6–12 and is now live in ParentVUE. Since this is a pilot, we appreciate your patience as we fine-tune the settings and process. We would also love to hear your feedback if you get a chance to try this new way of reporting absences. Click the PDF below for instructions and details on this process.
Reporting absences through ParentVUE is completely optional. You may still choose to contact the RHS attendance office as you have before. Partial day absences will still need to be called in to the attendance office.
For ParentVUE tech support and feedback, please email rcsvuehelp@rochester.k12.mi.us.

Spotlight on Instruction
Mrs. Painter and Mrs. Kavalar's LA10 class has been exploring the Harlem Renaissance through poetry. They have read and analyzed several pieces of poetry looking for common themes and identifying poetic elements. Now it's time to write their literary analysis essays. Students use a sequence of, "Notice-Appreciate-Wonder" to look closely at the various parts of a literary essay and the purposes for each of those parts. Later a discussion is held to uncover the complexities and relationships between the two. Using the thinking routine "B-Sure-2", a routine for learning from examples and planning forward, the class generates features that they need to be sure to incorporate into their own writing. These teachers know that learning is a consequence of thinking. Through scaffolding the thinking needed to write their essays, students' understanding will deepen and the primary focus at this time is on learning over a mere completion of work.
