Art on Auburn Contest

Picture
Rochester Hills Launches Citywide Contest for Young Artists Artists of All Ages and Abilities are invited to turn Auburn Road into their Canvas. Starting February 1st, Rochester Hills students are invited to submit their art to the "Art of Auburn" Contest. Multiple winners will get to see their artwork featured directly on the asphalt surface of Auburn Road.

To participate, artists grades K-12 will be able to submit artwork to illustrate the theme "What Community Means to Me." Participants can visit https://www.pccart.org/exhibitions/art-onauburn/ for official guidelines.

Parents, teachers, and students can also join an informational webinar on Thursday, January 28th. This webinar will explain the guidelines, discuss scoring criteria, and answer student questions. Those that cannot attend will be able to view a recording on the PCCA website.

“This is such a great opportunity for Rochester Hills students to have their artwork included in this large-scale public art project. These big, bold works of art will be a lasting reminder of the artist’s community pride,” states Paint Creek Center for the Arts Executive Director Elizabeth Chilton.

Students can submit artwork online through the website portal during the month of February. A panel of artists and community members will select up to 50 works of art for public vote. The pieces will be placed into categories based on the age of the artist. Community members can vote for their favorite designs online.

The contest will award multiple winners the opportunity to have their art featured on Auburn Road. Artwork will be enlarged to fit 6 - 7’ diameter circles. Winners will be announced and artwork will be unveiled at a community-wide celebration later this year.

“With families spending much of their free time at home, this program is a great opportunity to initiate the imagination of our youngest residents and provide them a creative way to engage in city design,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “We are excited to partner with the PCCA on this new initiative and look forward to adding some colorful public art to the corridor.”

About Paint Creek Center for the Arts The mission of Paint Creek Center for the Arts is to celebrate and support creativity in our community by providing opportunities for all to learn, create, experience, and appreciate the arts. Paint Creek Center for the Arts (PCCA) provides 300+ classes, workshops and camps annually; community-centered art exhibitions; and the Art & Apples Festival®. Located at 407 Pine Street in downtown Rochester, PCCA receives a portion of its funding from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. RCS COVID-19 Update

Dear RCS Families,

Thank you for your continued support as we begin welcoming our students back to school buildings safely. There is no doubt that public schools are essential for the health and well-being of our children and for our community as a whole.

Medical experts from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services now agree that schools can be safe learning environments and safe workplaces with the proper protocols in place. To that end, the state of Michigan has set a goal that all school districts offer an in-person learning option for students as soon as possible, and no later than March 1.

At Monday’s Board of Education work session, we presented the following tentative dates for students to return to the classroom full time, five days a week.
  • February 22 - Elementary and special programs
  • March 1 – Secondary
Please be assured that we are committed to opening schools safely. By ensuring processes and protocols are in place, we can mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19.

The new MDHHS Guidelines for Operating Schools Safely was released on Jan. 8, 2021. Many of the identified safety protocols and mitigation strategies have already been established within our district. These include the use of personal protective equipment such as face coverings; ensuring proper hand washing; focusing on spacing, movement, and access; and enhancing cleaning protocols.

Additional details are as follows:
  • To help limit movement, RCS elementary classrooms will function as a cohort, and secondary education will utilize block scheduling.
  • During lunchtime, schools will utilize spacing between students, additional tables and eating spaces, and staggered lunch times. All eating areas will be thoroughly cleaned between groups and classes.
  • Frequently touched surfaces, including light switches, doors, benches, and bathrooms, will be cleaned twice daily. After every class period, media centers, computer labs, arts, other hands-on classrooms, and student desks will be wiped down.
As a reminder, the proposed timeline for learning is:
  • Feb. 8 Hybrid in-person learning for high school
  • March 1 Full-time in-person learning for grades 6-12
We appreciate the support of our community in modeling healthy behaviors at home in order to protect our children, teachers, administrators and staff. It is our collective responsibility as a society to do what it takes to reopen schools for the remainder of this school year. We must follow the advice of health experts--mask up, limit gatherings, practice social distancing, wash hands frequently, and stay home if you feel sick or have COVID-19 symptoms.

Thank you for your support during these challenging times. Our RCS teams continue to remain focused on doing great things for our children.
Sincerely,
Debi Fragomeni
Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning

Checklist for In-Person Instruction

 OSTC Update

Dear Falcon OSTC Families,
With the recent update sent from OSTC regarding their return to face to face instruction on January 19th, we recognize that there are conflicts as we remain in a remote setting until our proposed return to in-person instruction on February 8th.
The schedule below was created to highlight the conflicts that will occur until we return to the RCS in- person/hybrid learning model.
We are asking that all OSTC students communicate with their teachers here at Rochester, as well as their teachers at OSTC, regarding the various ways students can access coursework.  It will be up to students to choose which classes to attend during the times of conflict and to communicate that with their teachers.
We will also communicate these conflicts with our teachers and ask that they do their best to accommodate our OSTC students during this temporary transition.
Transportation in the form of bussing to and from Rochester will occur.  Please see the bussing schedule below.

Food Service

Dear RCS Middle-School and High-School Families,
We are pleased to welcome secondary students into our middle schools and high schools in the coming weeks. It is important to note that onsite cafeteria service will not be available during the hybrid in-person learning schedule, since the shortened days allow students to return home for lunch.

Neither breakfast nor lunch will be served onsite during shortened days. Students may bring their own snacks to eat between classes in designated areas where mask removal is permitted.

Free meals are still available to all RCS families, through a USDA-approved waiver that provides breakfast and lunch meals for all children 18 years of age and younger, including ATPS students 26 years of age and younger. These meals, which meet guidelines from the USDA and Michigan Department of Education, will be distributed through the Rochester Community Schools food service program free of charge.

Families who would like to register for free breakfast and lunch meals via weekly curbside pickup should use this link: http://ow.ly/Khir50DeQOx. If you had been receiving curbside meals during the first semester, please sign up again now. A new registration is required for second-semester food service.

Secondary students attending school in person for half days and all students enrolled in the RCS Virtual Campus are eligible for 7-day curbside meal distribution from five locations throughout the district.
Monthly menus can be found here: https://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/pages/375/breakfast-lunch-menus.
For specific questions or concerns, please contact the food services office at 248-726-4618 or email focfoodservice@rochester.k12.mi.us.

If you have already applied for this year, you do not need to resubmit an application.

New Health Self-Screener for Athletics

Effective February 1, 2021, RCS is moving to a new platform for student athletes and visitors to use for COVID-19 screening.  The district has chosen a platform called Clear to Go! which has an app that you can download onto your Apple or Android phone.
For students, we have uploaded your RCS email address, student number, parent phone number and email address.  If you do not wish to download the app you may use the screener link found in the daily reminder sent to your chosen email address.  A screener reminder will go out via email at 7:00 a.m. Monday – Sunday. Upon receipt of the green check, you may proceed to practice / athletic event.  If you receive a Fail Exposure or a Fail Symptomatic notification, please do not enter the building and contact your coach or your athletic supervisor.  A case will be opened and you will be contacted to begin the investigation and contract tracing.  Below is information regarding the Clear to Go! screening process.
