Art on Auburn Contest
Rochester Hills Launches Citywide Contest for Young Artists Artists of All Ages and Abilities are invited to turn Auburn Road into their Canvas. Starting February 1st, Rochester Hills students are invited to submit their art to the "Art of Auburn" Contest. Multiple winners will get to see their artwork featured directly on the asphalt surface of Auburn Road.
To participate, artists grades K-12 will be able to submit artwork to illustrate the theme "What Community Means to Me." Participants can visit https://www.pccart.org/exhibitions/art-on-auburn/ for official guidelines.
Parents, teachers, and students can also join an informational webinar on Thursday, January 28th. This webinar will explain the guidelines, discuss scoring criteria, and answer student questions. Those that cannot attend will be able to view a recording on the PCCA website.
“This is such a great opportunity for Rochester Hills students to have their artwork included in this large-scale public art project. These big, bold works of art will be a lasting reminder of the artist’s community pride,” states Paint Creek Center for the Arts Executive Director Elizabeth Chilton.
Students can submit artwork online through the website portal during the month of February. A panel of artists and community members will select up to 50 works of art for public vote. The pieces will be placed into categories based on the age of the artist. Community members can vote for their favorite designs online.
The contest will award multiple winners the opportunity to have their art featured on Auburn Road. Artwork will be enlarged to fit 6 - 7’ diameter circles. Winners will be announced and artwork will be unveiled at a community-wide celebration later this year.
“With families spending much of their free time at home, this program is a great opportunity to initiate the imagination of our youngest residents and provide them a creative way to engage in city design,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “We are excited to partner with the PCCA on this new initiative and look forward to adding some colorful public art to the corridor.”
About Paint Creek Center for the Arts The mission of Paint Creek Center for the Arts is to celebrate and support creativity in our community by providing opportunities for all to learn, create, experience, and appreciate the arts. RCS COVID-19 Update
Dear RCS families,
These past few weeks have been a delightful celebration as we welcomed all grade levels safely back to our school buildings. Our teachers, administrators and staff have greeted students with open arms, and we are pleased that the learning transition has been fairly seamless. Here’s what our students and parents are saying: “The excitement and enthusiasm when talking about school has returned.” “I didn’t realize how much I missed my classroom.” “It looks different, but it feels great.” Appreciation was also expressed for the “kind, safe, welcoming and comfortable atmosphere provided by RCS during this unprecedented time.”
As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to share evidence that supports the safe re-opening of K-12 schools, Rochester Community Schools is prepared to welcome our in-person learning students back to the buildings full-time, five days per week. RCS elementary students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade will follow the original full-day schedule for their building, beginning Feb. 22. Bell times are attached.
Secondary students in grades 6-12 will return full-time on March 1. Collaboration among all stakeholders is fundamental to developing safe plans that keep our students in school. We are moving forward with great resolve to fine-tune the daily schedules for middle school and high school students. Details will be shared with the community as soon as possible. We are also grateful to our athletic directors, coaches and student-athletes who have resumed sports activities with a pledge to safety. Additionally, our band, choir and orchestra directors are finding innovative ways to let our musicians build skills and share their talents.
Finally, we’d like to thank our families, teachers, administrators, support staff and the community at large for supporting our students. Your efforts to follow important mitigation protocols that allow us to maintain healthy environments has enabled us to safely bring our children back to the buildings. We wish all RCS families a relaxing and enjoyable midwinter recess. As a reminder, there is no school Feb. 15-16. Classes resume on Feb. 17.
Sincerely,
Debi Fragomeni
Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning

OSTC Update
Dear Falcon OSTC Families,
With the recent update sent from OSTC regarding their return to face to face instruction on January 19th, we recognize that there are conflicts as we remain in a remote setting until our proposed return to in-person instruction on February 8th.
The schedule below was created to highlight the conflicts that will occur until we return to the RCS in- person/hybrid learning model.
We are asking that all OSTC students communicate with their teachers here at Rochester, as well as their teachers at OSTC, regarding the various ways students can access coursework. It will be up to students to choose which classes to attend during the times of conflict and to communicate that with their teachers.
We will also communicate these conflicts with our teachers and ask that they do their best to accommodate our OSTC students during this temporary transition.
Transportation in the form of bussing to and from Rochester will occur. Please see the bussing schedule below.

Academic Recognition
Seal of Biliteracy

Seal of Biliteracy Application for Seniors
In January 2018, the Michigan Department of Education introduced the Seal of Biliteracy to recognize high school seniors who are able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in a world language, in addition to English. This seal provides evidence of linguistic skills that are attractive to future employers and college admission offices, in addition to preparing students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and a global society. This application window is open for current seniors only. Testing will be done remotely; students must use their own devices and may test from home. The current capacity for this date is 30 students; additional dates will be added in the future for both seniors and juniors.
In order for students to be considered for this recognition, they must meet the following criteria:
1. Students must demonstrate a proficiency level of Intermediate High (as described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) in a world language.
2. Students must demonstrate proficiency in English by meeting MDE high school graduation requirements or its alternative.
3. English Language Learners (ELLs) must have earned a level 2.5 or higher on the ACCESS 2.0 assessment.
4. All students must fulfill the graduation requirements in all other content areas.
At this time, Rochester Community Schools is offering students the opportunity to earn the Seal based upon proficiency in any one language. In order to assess proficiency, the district will administer several state-approved assessments for students who wish to qualify.
REGISTRATION IS A 2-PART PROCESS
Part 1: Students must complete this online application using their RCS credentials: Seal of Biliteracy
Part 2: After completing this application, students who need to take the assessments will be sent a link to complete payment for testing. Please note that there may be a delay in receiving the link during spring break. Assessments cost $25 and must be paid for no later than 4pm on Friday, February 19, 2021 or students may not test. Every effort will be made to accommodate every language spoken throughout the district, but it may not be possible to earn the Seal of Biliteracy for a language for which a commercial assessment has not been developed.
For more information on the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy, please visit the Michigan Department of Education’s website. Should any questions arise, please contact Elizabeth Arcangeli, World Language Curriculum Coordinator at earcangeli@rochester.k12.mi.us. We look forward to celebrating this impressive accomplishment with our students and staff.

Food Service
Dear RCS Middle-School and High-School Families,
We are pleased to welcome secondary students into our middle schools and high schools in the coming weeks. It is important to note that onsite cafeteria service will not be available during the hybrid in-person learning schedule, since the shortened days allow students to return home for lunch.
Neither breakfast nor lunch will be served onsite during shortened days. Students may bring their own snacks to eat between classes in designated areas where mask removal is permitted.
Free meals are still available to all RCS families, through a USDA-approved waiver that provides breakfast and lunch meals for all children 18 years of age and younger, including ATPS students 26 years of age and younger. These meals, which meet guidelines from the USDA and Michigan Department of Education, will be distributed through the Rochester Community Schools food service program free of charge.
Families who would like to register for free breakfast and lunch meals via weekly curbside pickup should use this link: http://ow.ly/Khir50DeQOx. If you had been receiving curbside meals during the first semester, please sign up again now. A new registration is required for second-semester food service.
Secondary students attending school in person for half days and all students enrolled in the RCS Virtual Campus are eligible for 7-day curbside meal distribution from five locations throughout the district.
Monthly menus can be found here: https://www.rochester.k12.mi.us/pages/375/breakfast-lunch-menus.
For specific questions or concerns, please contact the food services office at 248-726-4618 or email focfoodservice@rochester.k12.mi.us.

New Health Self-Screener for Athletics
|
Effective February 1, 2021, RCS is moving to a new platform for student athletes and visitors to use for COVID-19 screening. The district has chosen a platform called Clear to Go! which has an app that you can download onto your Apple or Android phone.
For students, we have uploaded your RCS email address, student number, parent phone number and email address. If you do not wish to download the app you may use the screener link found in the daily reminder sent to your chosen email address. A screener reminder will go out via email at 7:00 a.m. Monday – Sunday. Upon receipt of the green check, you may proceed to practice / athletic event. If you receive a Fail Exposure or a Fail Symptomatic notification, please do not enter the building and contact your coach or your athletic supervisor. A case will be opened and you will be contacted to begin the investigation and contract tracing. Below is information regarding the Clear to Go! screening process. |
