SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION

Ms. Kavalar and Ms. Lusky created a lesson plan on gratitude to share with Ms. Kavalar’s classes. Students learned about the positive impact expressing gratitude has on individuals,, including themselves, and how important gratitude is to well-being. To begin this lesson, the students watched a Youtube video called, "An Experiment in Gratitude:  The Science of Happiness." It explained how simple things like a phone call could make others happy. Next, students visited the Media Center Think Tanks, where they explored the topic of gratitude further by recording their thinking on the Think Tanks’ writable walls. Students spent one minute at a time at different spots on the walls that were posted with sentence starters like,  “I’m thankful for my family because…” or, “I’m thankful for myself because…” When students were finished, they had the opportunity to view what their peers said. Then, they wrote letters to the person or place of their choice. In doing so, the students had a hands on experience in gratitude. Reporting by Bianca Mow

VIRTUAL AUTOPSY EXPERIENCE

Pathology and Anatomy students had the opportunity to view an autopsy and interact with a pathology resident via an opportunity from the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio.  The resident explains the process and medical findings to students as the recorded autopsy is shown.  Students were able to ask the pathologist questions they had as the autopsy was going.  Students were able to apply medical knowledge and terminology they have acquired throughout their courses to determine potential causes of death.  This amazing opportunity was generously funded by the RHS PTSA.

KEY CLUB MAKES CANDY GRAMS FOR OPC

Key Club members met on Wednesday after school to make candy grams for the OPC’s Meals on Wheels program.  Theses candy grams will be delivered to those that are homebound around the holiday season.  The students had a great time expressing their holiday cheer!

Key Club will continue to collect used men’s jeans, hoodies, and sweatshirts throughout the school year.  These are donated to a soup kitchen in Detroit and are given to the local homeless men that eat at the kitchen.  Men’s tennis shoes in good condition as well as new winter hats and gloves are also appreciated.  Please keep this in mind when going through closets.  Others benefit from clothing we no longer need.  Please bring donations to Mrs. O’Toole-Seyka in the counseling office.

FMB IN HOLIDAY PARADES

What band had the honor of escorting Santa Claus into Canada and the US this year? That’s right, your very own 2018 Rochester High School Falcon Marching Band. Did you know that Canada does not have marching bands? So every year the Falcon Marching Band crosses the border to play in the Sarnia Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade, which was created by the Kinsmen Club of Sarnia 38 years ago and has become an annual tradition enjoyed by thousands of local citizens, as well as hundreds of visitors from the US. “Songs of Christmas" was the theme of this year’s parade and on Saturday, December 1, the Falcon Marching Band provided the music that entertained thousands.

After Saturday evening’s performance, the FMB was back at it again on Sunday, December 2, marching in the 67th annual Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade. This parade is the largest Christmas parade in Michigan, with at least 75,000 people in attendance.  The FMB performed three songs this year: “Jingle Bell Jam,” “Here We Come A-Wassailing” and “We Need a Little Christmas.”  Congratulations on two outstanding performances!

2018-2019 BATTLE OF THE BOOKS SELECTIONS & RHS BOOK CLUB UPDATE

The Battle Books for 2018-2019 have been chosen and the list is amazing! These titles come from the students' nominations, which were thoughtful and targeted books from all genres and topics.
At the Rochester High Book Club meeting on November 20, book club members read the first pages of some of the Battle selections out loud to decide which books they would like to dig into first. We discussed how mood and tone of a book play into our desire to keep reading, and we made these awesome pen and sticky note holders so we could take notes as we read.
Rochester High BOTB readers will be very ready to take on the other schools during the Battle Night Trivia Competition on April 26, 2019!
Our next Rochester High Book Club meeting is on Tuesday, December 18, right after school in the Media Center. All are welcome!
