SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION

Mrs. Thomas’ World History classes participated in a build-your-own-game project, where students built their own versions of games that related to their unit on Empire Building. The students were asked to construct their own board game; however, they were given almost complete creative freedom in regards to how the board would function. Some students made an entirely new board game and some chose to take elements from previously existing games to help inspire their own. This project acted as their test for the unit since each board game was required to include information and terms from the lesson. They spent the day exploring each other’s games and the winner would be crowned “Most Successful Empire”. The competition was fantastic and the students seemed to enjoy their day to play games and review.

KEY CLUB MAKES CANDY GRAMS FOR OPC

Key Club members met on Wednesday after school to make candy grams for the OPC’s Meals on Wheels program.  Theses candy grams will be delivered to those that are homebound around the holiday season.  The students had a great time expressing their holiday cheer!

Key Club will continue to collect used men’s jeans, hoodies, and sweatshirts throughout the school year.  These are donated to a soup kitchen in Detroit and are given to the local homeless men that eat at the kitchen.  Men’s tennis shoes in good condition as well as new winter hats and gloves are also appreciated.  Please keep this in mind when going through closets.  Others benefit from clothing we no longer need.  Please bring donations to Mrs. O’Toole-Seyka in the counseling office.

FMB IN HOLIDAY PARADES

What band had the honor of escorting Santa Claus into Canada and the US this year? That’s right, your very own 2018 Rochester High School Falcon Marching Band. Did you know that Canada does not have marching bands? So every year the Falcon Marching Band crosses the border to play in the Sarnia Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade, which was created by the Kinsmen Club of Sarnia 38 years ago and has become an annual tradition enjoyed by thousands of local citizens, as well as hundreds of visitors from the US. “Songs of Christmas" was the theme of this year’s parade and on Saturday, December 1, the Falcon Marching Band provided the music that entertained thousands.

After Saturday evening’s performance, the FMB was back at it again on Sunday, December 2, marching in the 67th annual Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade. This parade is the largest Christmas parade in Michigan, with at least 75,000 people in attendance.  The FMB performed three songs this year: “Jingle Bell Jam,” “Here We Come A-Wassailing” and “We Need a Little Christmas.”  Congratulations on two outstanding performances!

MiCAREER QUEST FIELD TRIP

Mrs. Malsbury, Ms. O'Toole-Seyka and Mr. Green took interested students to MiCareer Quest at Novi Suburban Collection Showplace on Wednesday.  The students were able to take part in an innovative, hands-on career exploration experience to learn about today's hottest jobs from working professionals.    The theme was:  Find Your Future.  There were 4 quadrants full of future jobs options; Health Sciences, Construction, Information Technology, and Advanced Manufacturing.  It was very informative and a wonderful experience.  We hope to go again next year and take more students with us so they can see their future!

2018-2019 BATTLE OF THE BOOKS SELECTIONS & RHS BOOK CLUB UPDATE

The Battle Books for 2018-2019 have been chosen and the list is amazing! These titles come from the students' nominations, which were thoughtful and targeted books from all genres and topics.
At the Rochester High Book Club meeting on November 20, book club members read the first pages of some of the Battle selections out loud to decide which books they would like to dig into first. We discussed how mood and tone of a book play into our desire to keep reading, and we made these awesome pen and sticky note holders so we could take notes as we read.
Rochester High BOTB readers will be very ready to take on the other schools during the Battle Night Trivia Competition on April 26, 2019!
Our next Rochester High Book Club meeting is on Tuesday, December 18, right after school in the Media Center. All are welcome!

SPANISH CLASSES FRIDA KAHLO PROJECT

Ms. East and Ms. Scislowicz’ Spanish 3 classes created projects to represent the life and works of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. After reading authentic articles in Spanish and watching a documentary about this complex woman, students went to the maker station lab to create paintings, posters, models, etc. which demonstrated a clear understanding of Frida’s life, including her greatest struggles and successes. The winners of the competition received Frida-themed prizes, including socks, bags and folders.  Winners are pictured with their projects.

RCS MARIJUANA LEGAL INFORMATION

Picture
As you may be aware, Michigan voters recently approved a law allowing adult recreational use of marijuana throughout the state. Michigan’s new marijuana law will take effect on December 6, 2018.
Rochester Community Schools would like to take a moment to inform our families about the law as it relates to our school community.
Use on School Property
The legalization of recreational marijuana does not change the fact that marijuana, alcohol, and other drugs are prohibited from our school campuses. Use of marijuana, including being under the influence, is strictly prohibited on school property. Our schools are, and will remain, drug free zones.
Workplace
Rochester Community Schools will continue to observed Board Policy 3206, Alcohol and Drug Free Workplace, which states:
“The District will maintain a workplace free of alcohol and illegal drugs, as well as prescription drugs for which an employee does not have a current, valid prescription. An employee or volunteer who is found to have unlawfully manufactured, distributed, dispensed, possessed or used alcohol or any drug in the workplace shall be disciplined, up to and including discharge from employment. Similarly, an employee or volunteer who is found to have been present in the workplace while under the influence of illegal drugs, prescription drugs for which the employee or volunteer does not have a current, valid prescription or alcohol will be subject to discipline, up to and including discharge.”
Use in Public
While private use of marijuana by residents 21 years and older will be decriminalized, smoking marijuana in public will be a civil infraction. Michigan businesses will continue to be smoke-free environments. Individual cities will also have the right to regulate or prohibit marijuana businesses in their towns.[1]
Driving
Michigan has a zero-tolerance policy for drugged driving. Any amount of a Schedule 1 controlled substance in a driver’s body, to include THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), is illegal.[2]
Federal Law
Federal law continues to treat marijuana as a controlled substance, which means the use of marijuana is illegal according to the federal government.
Dangers of Use
The younger marijuana use begins, the higher the risk of addiction.[3] One in six teens who start using marijuana become addicted.[4]  Each year, more teens enter treatment with a primary diagnosis of marijuana addiction than any other illegal drug combined.[5]
