Field Trip to Hamtramack

On Monday, November 11th, 2019 Rochester High School art classes took a field trip to Hamtramack to experience their up and coming art scene, and see real artists put their talents to work. First stop was a visit to a former RHS alumnus graphic design studio, Good. Done Daily. While there professional graphic designers shared their past and current projects and spoke to students about their careers. Students also visited Dmytro Szylak’s “Disneyland Hamtramck”, and outdoor found art sculpture park reminiscent of Tyree Guyton’s Heidelberg Project.  The last stop, and highlight of the trip, was The Detroit Parade Company where students got an up close look at the floats for the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students were able to see the artists as the practices their craft, sculpting and painting the floats in preparation for the big day.

RHS National Art Honor Society

Rochester High School National Art Honor Society proudly gather around their finished painted plow. As part of an annual community tradition each school sends students to design and paint the plows for the snow trucks in preparation for the upcoming winter weather.

Project Zen Succulent Sale at Holiday Bazaar

Ms.Malsbury’s Virtual Enterprise class made their first appearance as a business at the Holiday Bizarre, hosted here last weekend. Virtual Enterprise aims to bring the workplace into the classroom and teach students through the experience of running a virtual business. This year, the VE company “Project Zen” is selling subscription boxes that provide stress relief by targeting the five senses; one of the most popular products in the box being succulents. Although the business is rooted online, the sales of tangible products, such as succulents, help aid them in reaching fundraising goals. The overall goal set within the company is to reach a profit from their sales of $2000, which will allow them to qualify to attend trade shows in Chicago and New York City.

RHS Non-Perishable Food Drive

Next Week, November 18-22, is Rochester High School's Annual Non-Perishable Food Drive. Our Goal is 5,000 Cans, and we will be collecting each day in the Media Center before, during, and after school.
In addition, before each performance of the musical, we will be collecting cans and money in order to reach our goal.
On Tuesday, we will have a Breakfast Blitz, in which during 1st Hour, classes will race to collect the most money. The class that raises the most gets a Pancake Breakfast provided by Red Olive.
Friday Morning, we will be having our first ever Frappe Friday - Either a Caramel Coffee, Vanilla bean or Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino will cost 5 cans or $3.
The grade that collects the most cans will receive a prize, so start donating!

MiCareer Quest Field Trip

45 Students from RHS attended a career field trip to Suburban Showplace in Novi, Michigan. It was a career exploration unlike any other, designed to spark students curiosity and introduce them to many of today's most in-demand occupations in southeast Michigan and across the state. If anyone has any questions please see Mrs. Cosentino, Mrs. Messing or Mrs. Malsbury.

Host an Amity Scholar from Spain!

Are you interested in hosting our visiting Amity Scholar from Madrid? The Amity Institute is a program that builds international friendships and cultural understanding through teaching exchange.  It enhances the foreign language classes by having a native speaker to assist and offer firsthand cultural and language knowledge.  Sebastián Raúl Barnabe is a 23-year old beginning teacher who will need housing with a family from late January through mid-June.  If you would to experience hosting a native speaker and form an international friendship, please contact Beth East at beast@rcs-k12.us . (We can divide the semester between 2 families if needed).

Model UN Club

On Saturday, November 9th, Rochester High School's Model United Nations Club attended the Southeast Michigan Model United Nations Association's (SEMMUNA) Fall Conference at Stoney Creek High School, accompanied by club adviser, Ms. Frisby. Rochester High School students were among the 865 delegates and 35 schools participating in this year’s conference. Rochester students were split into various committees where they attempted to devise diplomatic resolutions for specific global issues, including instability in the Persian Gulf region, HIV and AIDS, freedom of the press in politically underdeveloped nations, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Students engaged in diplomatic negotiations with students from other schools, spoke on behalf of their nations’ interests, and learned more about the complex issues facing our world today from diverse perspectives. They then collaborated with other nations’ representatives in their committees to write resolutions in which they might compromise or remain firm in their positions depending on the issue and viewpoints at hand. The global focus of Model United Nations, coupled with engagement in real-world research, speaking, writing, and negotiating skills, makes opportunities like the SEMMUNA Conference an ideal place for RHS students to gain valuable experiences and have fun while doing so!
