SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION

At the beginning of October, Mrs. Kay’s World History class took part in a hands-on research project. Students had to research a significant Renaissance figure. Students did research on their historical figures, learning how their they related to the Renaissance, including how they may have challenged ideas and institutions of their time. After spending a few days on that, students engaged in a “dinner party” to learn more about others from this time period. Students  had snacks, name tags, and sheets to record information. They were graded on participation and the information that they shared with their classmates. This activity gave students an authentic opportunity to see connections between different Renaissance historical figures, as well as better understand how these figures connected to themes from the Renaissance.

SOPHOMORES VISIT WAYNE STATE

Counselors took 33 sophomores to Wayne State University on 10/25 to have a college-going experience.  They met with Wayne’s admission’s representative, Mr. Nick Doyle, and toured the campus with Wayne State students.  They were able to sit in a lecture hall and finished with lunch in the student center.  The students and counselors enjoyed the sunshine and had a great experience.  Rochester High students are college bound!

DEPUTY TOPACIO AND MORDUS VISIT PRACTICAL LAW

Mrs. Bettes’ Practical Law classes heard an engaging presentation from Deputy Topacio and his K9 partner, Mordus, from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy Topacio shared with the class what situations Mordus would be used for, how Mordus is trained, and his experiences in law enforcement. He also demonstrated through mock search work and article searches how Mordus assists the police department. The students engaged in a fantastic Q & A session at the end to hear more about Deputy Topacio’s experiences as a K9 Deputy and learn more about criminal law.

ROTARY CLUB J OB SHADOW PROGRAM

Picture
The Rochester Rotary Club is proud to once again offer an incredible Job Shadowing opportunity to the Rochester Community Schools high school students. The Rochester Rotary club will be hosting its annual Job Shadow program on November 6, 2018. Over the past 15 years the Rochester Rotary Club has consistently organized safe opportunities for high school students to learn more about a career field that they are interested in pursuing.

The Job Shadow program is an annual program were students are able to select a desired career field they have interest in and are paired with a Rotarian from our club who is experienced in that field. The students are able to learn real world experience and then attend our weekly lunch to talk about what they learned. The students are more then welcome and encouraged to list this on their resumes moving forward. The students often find their Rotarian mentors give them great advice on how to advance in their desired field giving them a great leg up.

Members of the high school Interact clubs will be given preference when choosing what career field they wish to attend while paring the students with Rotarian mentors. Interact club are a Rotary sponsored high school club focused on the same values that Rotary promotes - Service Above Self. The high school clubs get involved in different fundraising & service projects as well as participating in Rotary projects. If students are looking to get involved in a great club, participating in the Job Shadow program might be a great way to learn more about not only a career path but a great club in the high schools.

If interested, please see Mrs. Messing in the counseling office.

APES AQUATIC STUDY

AP Environmental Science students went with Mr. Shurter on their annual Aquatic Study on Tuesday, October 16. This is no ordinary field trip, as students collected physical, chemical, and biological data from Paint Creek (a tributary of the Clinton River) and Trout Lake in Bald Mountain Recreation Area. It was a crisp but sunny day and the study was a major success. It was truly a day they will never forget. Students will be able to use their data to determine the water quality of each source and even share their results with the Clinton River Watershed Council which works with the Michigan DEQ. If you see an APES student, ask them about it!

THE RHS MakerSpace

RHS has a new classroom this year: The RHS MakerSpace!  This is a room where teachers can take students to create, invent, and learn. It is filled with tools, art supplies, technology, and re-purposed materials that allow students to design, build, investigate, and experience hands-on creativity applied to their classroom learning.
The inspiration for bringing a MakerSpace to RHS was a school visit attended by two RHS teachers, Mrs. Laura Matthews, AP Government teacher, and Mrs. Kara Sears, AP Capstone and US History teacher. After seeing a MakerSpace and realizing how it could be applied to any class, they put a plan into action to bring one to RHS. Through a generous PTSA grant, they obtained shelving, chairs, art supplies, and technology to equip the room and provide students with as much creative potential as possible. Both Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Sears put in long summer hours to prepare the room to be ready on the first day of school!
Within the first month, the MakerSpace has been a popular addition to our school! Students love the experience of applying their learning to the creative process. Examples of projects include:
  • AP Government students creating a replica of federal government involvement.
  • Cognitively impaired students made ramps for Matchbox cars to go down and described their designs.
  • Our marketing and advertising class “upcycled” t-shirts into a “new” item, creating a company name and brand with their new clothing line.
  • Personal finance students created a Vision Board to illustrate their education goals and career plans.
  • 20th century lit  students designed a setting from the novel Siddhartha and explained the significance of each design choice, then exchanged projects among each other to add detail and improve upon the initial design.
Re-Purposeable Items Wanted!
To keep our MakerSpace stocked with materials, please consider donating your surplus and unused items from home! Anything that is clean and re-purposeable has great potential to be used. Possible categories include (but are not limited to):
  • Miscellaneous plastics
  • Miscellaneous metals
  • Miscellaneous wood items
  • Cardboard
  • Fabric and fabric scraps
  • String and yarn
  • Wire
  • Beads
  • Styrofoam
  • Chenille strips (aka pipe cleaners)
  • Cotton balls
  • Toothpicks
  • Legos
  • Staplers and staples
  • Miscellaneous crafting supplies of any kind
And we would gladly welcome donations of consumable products such as:
  • Mini glue sticks
  • Tape of all kinds
Please drop off any donations in the Main Office, or send them to school with your student and have him/her drop it off in the Media Center. All students using the MakerSpace thank you!
