AP Environmental Science Field Trip

AP Environmental Science students went with Mr. Shurter to perform their annual Aquatic Study on Tuesday 10/15. This is no ordinary field trip as students collected physical, chemical, and biological data from Paint Creek (a tributary to the Clinton River) and Trout Lake in Bald Mountain Recreation Area. It was a crisp but sunny day and the study was a major success. It was truly a day they will never forget. Students will be able to use their data to determine the water quality of each source and even share their results with the Clinton River Watershed Council which works with the Michigan DEQ. If you see an APES student, ask them about it!

Blessings in a Backpack

The Students in Mrs. Cosentino’s class, along with their family members, Mrs. Cox, Ms. Burke, volunteered with packaging up food for our local Blessings in a Backpack organization.   Blessings In a Backpack is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families. Each week, volunteers, distribute bags with enough non-perishable food for the weekend for students in our district.  The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success. We would like to thank Rochester High School parent, Mrs. Kim Williams for coordinating and leading this wonderful organization in our community.

Interested in Hosting an International Student?

Are you interested in hosting our visiting Amity Scholar from Madrid? The Amity Institute is a program that builds international friendships and cultural understanding through teaching exchange.  It enhances the foreign language classes by having a native speaker to assist and offer firsthand cultural and language knowledge.  Sebastián Raúl Barnabe will need housing with a family from late January through mid-June.  If you would to experience hosting a native speaker and form an international friendship, please contact Beth East at beast@rcs-k12.us . (We can divide the semester between 2 families if needed).

Congratulations to our RHS Bikers!

This past Sunday the Rochester Mountain Bike Team rode its last race of the 2019 season. There were 11 students participating and we had 5 top 10 finishes.  Way to go Rochester! It was great to see so many families and friends coming out to support our riders. Highlights were Rebecca Hartrick not only podiuming with a 4th place finish but also winning an overall series 3rd place award. Congratulations Rebecca! There was a new recognition award added this year – the Women in MTB Award for girls who go above and beyond for the sport of mountain biking. Emily Eckel was one of the proud recipients for her hard work and dedication to starting our Rochester Mountain Bike Team. Congrats Emily! Thank you for leaving an awesome legacy at Rochester High School. MiSCA (Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association) also recognized all the senior students during the awards ceremony. Outgoing seniors include Emily Eckel, Alexander Reeve, and Mario Prisciandaro. Congratulations seniors! Good luck, and may the passion for the sport be always in your heart. If you’d like to learn more about the Rochester Mountain Bike Team, visit our website at www.rhsbiketeam.com or email us at rhsbiketeam@gmail.com for more information.

Congratulations to the Equestrian Team!

The RHS equestrian team had a great year, coming in fourth overall during our District meet.  Kate Faglie has several top notch rides with notable first and second placings in western riding and horsemanship.

Social Studies National Honor Society

Picture
RHS's Social Studies National Honor Society requested and was awarded a pop-up display from the National Archives in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Called Rightfully Hers: American Women and the Vote, this display contains messages about the expansion of the vote to women before and after the 19th amendment and its impact today.

In addition to the display, the Social Studies National Honor Society students donated 11 books to the Media Center to commemorate the subject and increase awareness of American women who've impacted history.

Rotary Interact Club

It’s Polio Awareness Month! Rotary International, a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, has helped to reduce polio cases by more than 99.9% over the last 30 years. They believe it is crucial to eliminate polio from the last three countries where it remains endemic. Overall, they have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries and have contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide.

Rochester High School’s Rotary Interact Club is having a Purple Pinkies fundraiser for this initiative on October 24th during all three lunches. Students who donate $1 towards this cause will get their pinkies painted purple to spread awareness!

RHS FMB earns 1st Division Rating at MSBOA District Marching Band Festival
Wind, rain and cold temperatures could not stop the Falcon Marching Band on October 16th at the MSBOA District XVI Marching Band Festival, hosted at Troy High School.  8 local high school marching bands performed and were judged on music, marching and general effect.  The 146-member FMB took the crowd and judges back 50 years to 1969 with their performance of Woodstock classics, including Pinball Wizard, Dance to the Music, Soul Sacrifice, Purple Haze, White Rabbit and Proud Mary.  Their energetic performance earned the band a PERFECT 1st Division Rating, with all 1’s in each of the 3 major categories, and all A’s in each of the 9 sub-categories!  Congratulations to the 2019 Falcon Marching Band! And huge thanks to all of the student athletes, coaches, teachers & administrators that came out to support the band!

Don't miss their performance tonight at the RHS football game, where they will be performing with the Stoney Creek High School Marching Band!  And stick around after the game for the drumline battle and post-game performance by both bands!
