SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
On Tuesday, April 23, students in Mrs. Facca’s Advanced Multimedia Communications class, which produces RHS’s student newspaper, The Talon, attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association’s Spring Awards Ceremony. Students on The Talon’s staff won 28 individual awards for their work in news design, newswriting, photography, and art and illustration. The Talon also earned a Gold rating for the overall newspaper, which is the second-highest rating MIPA awards to a school newspaper.
Each month, students on The Talon’s staff pitch stories, conduct interviews, take photos, write multiple stories, and design newspaper pages. In addition to this, students write social media posts and publish stories to The Talon’s website, rochestertalon.com.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY FIELD TRIP
On Monday, April 29, Mrs. Slomka’s Anatomy and Physiology classes traveled to the University of Michigan Flint to tour the Cadaver Lab and also hear a lecture by Dr. Steven Myers- the Biology Department Chair and professor of Anatomy and cell biology. Students had the opportunity to not only touch and hold plasticized human specimens but were also able to view and touch cadavers currently undergoing dissections by the university students. It was an engaging and mind opening experience for these Falcons, further fueling their drive to pursue a medical path in their college career.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS UPDATE
The Battle of the Books battle was Friday night, April 26th, at Adams HS, and Rochester High School took home the trophy! The district PTA president awarded prizes to the students who won and placed in the Battle of the Books Logo contest. Brian LeBel from RHS took 2nd place! Next, all students present skyped with 4 of the authors of the 7 books. The books were chosen back in November and schools had monthly book club meetings with many of the students that were reading the books. There were also contests to earn points prior to the battle. First, everyone skyped with Brendan Kiely who co-wrote All American Boys, Lita Judge who wrote Mary's Monster, Justina Ireland who wrote Dread Nation, and Randa Abdel-Fattah who wrote The Lines We Cross. The students were able to ask questions of the authors and were very engaged. Kristin Bartley Lenz, who wrote The Art of Holding on and Letting Go, was also there in person. Next was a Jepordy style trivia game with questions worth 100 to 500 points on each book and the school teams wrote their answers and were awarded points for correct answers. Rochester, Adams, Stoney Creek and Ace participated. Congrats to RHS with a total of 11,875 points!
There are still some spots open to be on the Battle of the Books committee next year! Please become a part of this amazing event!
