SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
Mrs. Huvaere teaches AP studio art, drawing/painting, advanced drawing/painting, advanced photography, yearbook and graphic design. In the month of March, one project students completed in her advanced drawing/painting class was using graphite drawing pencils to create a still life from observation, with emphasis on value, light and shading. “Students were given a choice of four different groupings of objects to choose to draw based on skill, confidence and prior experience,” said Mrs. Huvaere. Throughout the activity, her students completed warm-up exercises by drawing spheres, cones, cylinders, and cubes with valuing transformations of shapes to 3-D forms. The students then further discussed and learned basic forms and how to create or apply them to other objects. When teaching, the strategy that she likes to use the most is choice. “I love to design lessons that allow students to make creative and conscious decisions about their artwork,” said Mrs. Huvaere.
