GIRLS SWIM AND DIVE TEAM HELPS YOUTH IN PONTIAC
On July 20, members of the Rochester High School Girls Swim & Dive team gathered together in Pontiac to make and serve a meal to 130 children at the Power Company Kids Club Leadership Camp in Pontiac. RHS Captains Kendall Jordan, Katherine Lee, and Grace Forlines approached numerous restaurants in the community for food donations and coordinated the service project. Several team members held successful can drives to help finance the project. With generous donations from both Qdoba’s locations, Nino Salvaggio’s of Troy, and families of the team, the swim team collectively prepared and served a nutritious meal of soft tacos, rice, nachos, vegetables, fruit, juice and dessert to the children. The team chose to donate extra funds to sponsor 3 children to attend programming throughout the summer at PCKC.
The Power Company Kids Club is a faith based, non-profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of the children who are less fortunate. It’s goal is to provide a safe place for impoverished children to spend time and grow. The organization stresses the importance of individual empowerment. At the summer Leadership Camp, children learn the values of determination, priority, and success. With the help of role models, children experience life-changing memories and are inspired to grow into leaders who may help to make a difference in the world and their own community.
With 49% of the children living below poverty line, almost 1,000 as known gang members in Pontiac, and only 37% graduating from high school, the Rochester Girls Swim & Dive team is thankful to have been given the opportunity to help these children. The girls are dedicated to giving back to the community and have gained an unforgettable experience. The team looks forward to continuing to make a difference by partnering with Power Company and collecting Halloween candy for the children in the fall.
