PSAT THROUGH THE PRINCETON REVIEW
NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS
This year Rochester High is proud to announce three semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These three students were part of the 16,000 students selected in the country from their PSAT/NMSQT score last fall. As juniors these students elected to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program, as semifinalists they must complete an application to be considered for a finalist standing. Rochester High School Students who are National Merit Semifinalists are: Afrah Ansari, Katherine Lee, and Anirudhan Ramaseshan. Congratulations to these exemplary students!
ROCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN TEAM
We have two fantastic riders representing RHS: Kate Faglie (freshman) and Saige Morgan (junior). With two riders we are competing as a "D" team against Royal Oak, Lake Orion and Lapeer in our District competition with the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association. There are almost 1300 high school riders competing across the state this year. With one meet under our belts, RHS riders will be facing off both Saturday and Sunday for competition at the Oakland county fair grounds in Davisburg (Springfield Oaks County Park, near Clarkston). Our riders begin at 8 am with Western, Hunt Sest, Saddleseat, Speed classes and a whole host of horsemanship skills.
It has been a nail biter of competition. The top team has 101 points, the second team has 80, and RHS is a close third at 76 points. The top two teams go in to regionals in Mason, Michigan. Our riders are working hard and strategizing to claim that second spot. Keep your fingers crossed!

PSAT AT RHS
THE 2017-2018 FMB DRUM MAJORS
This year, the Falcon Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. David A. Uhrig, is led by three energetic, fun-loving and passionate drum majors: Lizabeth Desmet, Julian Karagounis and Erica Straus.
Liz Desmet, a senior, is serving in her second year as Drum Major. She joined band as a middle schooler, and, though she plays many different instruments, her focus is on the flute. Liz says that she wanted to become a drum major, “because I wanted to make an impact on RHS's band program. My freshman year, three different band directors juggled our band program, and the spirit of the bands died out a little bit. I really wanted to bring pride and positivity back to the program and retain our title as Rochester's First and Finest!” The pride is back! After high school, Liz plans to major in flute performance and music education.
Julian Karagounis is a senior who has been active in almost every possible music venue at RHS including theatre, choir, band and color guard. Julian said that he wanted to be a drum major because, “I want to inspire students to become more passionate about music and allow them to come out of their shells so they can be themselves, and show them that they have a family here in the FMS who will support them and be there for them no matter what.” Julian plans on majoring in musical theater and becoming a performer.
Erica Straus is a junior at RHS. Erica says she loves music “because of its overall beauty and the enjoyment that comes from playing it, as well as its ability to inspire others and how it helps people connect.” Erica loves being up on the podium! Even though she has two more years in high school, Erica is looking ahead to majoring in pre-law and playing in a campus band when she gets to college.
Good luck to the Falcon Marching Band!

SNHS FUNDRAISER UPDATE
Last year, the Spanish National Honor Society held a fundraiser called The Pulsera Project, which meant selling homemade bracelets made by artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala to support the education system in those countries. RHS raised almost $2,700 and today I received homemade maracas that say “Rochester High” from The Pulsera Project to show their sincere gratitude.
CONGRATS RHS STUDENT ON STATE HORSE SCHOLARSHIP
Saige Morgan competed at the Michigan State Fair this last weekend and was chosen as one of two horse scholarship award winners for the state. Scholarship awards were based primarily from points received during this weekend's equestrian events, letter of recommendation, transcripts and application. Sage did an amazing job competing with her horses! She also entered home arts competitions of seeing, woodworking, art, photography, leather crafts, and actually won two scholarships; once for Home Arts and once for Agricultural/Horses, but students are only allowed to accept one scholarship!
