Recognizing Mr. Haney
Today students from Rochester High School surprised a beloved special education teacher who is color blind, Jeff Haney, with special glasses for color blindness that will enable him to see colors for the first time. A student, Shane A., reached out and an anonymous donation of the glasses was made for Mr. Haney. The color blind can struggle to see all the colors in a sunset, a painting, flower or a loved one’s eyes. Red-green color blindness affects 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women (.5%) – about 13 million in the US and 300 million worldwide. To the color blind, the world appears dull, washed out and some colors are indistinguishable; like purple and blue. To them, pink looks gray; red and green stoplights look white-ish; red looks brown and peanut butter green. Above, you can see the emotional moment as the students surprised Mr. Haney and he describes the colorful new world he can see.

Rochester Showcase
Join us for the RHS Showcase, Thursday, January 14th, 6-7:30 pm, in the auditorium. Come hear from teachers, counselors and students about the different learning opportunities provided at Rochester High School. The evening will include a panel discussion on the following RHS learning opportunities and programs:
- The College Board's Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) is a global program designed and committed to the daily work of developing college-level knowledge and skills. AP enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies with the opportunity to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both while still in high school. Rochester Community Schools offers 25 AP courses each culminating in a rigorous assessment, students learn how to examine texts, interpret data, evaluate evidence, construct solid arguments and see multiple sides of an issue.
- Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in future careers and to become lifelong learners. In total, about 12.5 million high school and college students are enrolled in CTE across the nation. CTE prepares these learners for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies, and makes academic content accessible to students by providing it in a hands-on context. (Careertech.org, 2019)
- Oakland Schools Technical Campuses (OSTC) 18 programs prepare students who want to graduate high school with industry certifications, on-the-job experiences, business connections and college credits. Through internships, apprenticeships and job shadows, students will learn what it is like to work in their chosen fields before spending thousands of dollars to figure it out in college. The OSTCs are preparing students for the real world through career exploration, hands-on experiences and opportunities to excel through industry competitions and student leadership programs.
